Edward Cummings Obituary

Edward R. Cummings, 91, a resident of St. Antoine Residence, North Smithfield RI passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29th with his brother by his side. He was the loving husband of the late Jeannine M. (Grenon) Cummings. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late William H. and Elizabeth C. (Hurley) Cummings.

Edward was a lifelong resident of Woonsocket. He was a graduate of Mt. St. Charles Academy class of 1944, Providence College, and Rhode Island College. He was a two - year WWII Army veteran, serving time in the Philippines. Edward enjoyed an extensive teaching career in Woonsocket, later retiring as principal of Harris School in 1988. Throughout his career and post retirement, Ed taught English as Second Language evening classes to hundreds of adult students, often advocating for them outside of the classroom by helping them find employment and housing. He was an active communicant and volunteer at Our Lady of Victories Church and later, All Saints Church.

Ed enjoyed traveling and meeting people, one of his most memorable trips was to China, Hong Kong and Japan. There he toured schools as a delegate with the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Ed loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was also especially fond of social gatherings, playing cards and spending time with his many dear friends.

He leaves his son, Philip Cummings and his wife Donna, of Huntersville, NC and their children Kate and Meredith; his daughter, Carolyn Hubbard and her husband Jay, of Marshfield, MA and their children Joel and Zachary; and daughter-in-law, Margaret Cummings of Barrington, RI and her children Caitlin and Peter; his dear longtime friend Lorraine Robidoux of Woonsocket; his brother, John Cummings and his wife Constance of No. Smithfield; his sister, Elizabeth Cummings of No. Smithfield. He also leaves many close friends and many nieces and nephews whom he treasured dearly. He was predeceased by his son, Peter A. Cummings, his brother William J. Cummings, and his sister Mary A. Cummings.

His funeral will be held February 3, 2018 at 9:30 AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM at All Saints Church, 323 Rathbun St., Woonsocket. Burial will follow at Precious Blood Cemetery, Rathbun St., Woonsocket. Calling hours are Friday from 4 - 7 PM. The family is most grateful for the devoted care that he received from the entire St. Antoine community. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be earmarked to the special care unit of St. Antoine Residence, 10 Rhodes Ave., No. Smithfield, RI 02896.
