James Watson Obituary

James G. Watson, 93, of Woonsocket, died February 14, 2017 in Woonsocket Health Rehabilitation Centre. He was the husband of the late Mary M.L. (Dandy) Chaplin-Watson and the late Helen (Burton) Watson. Born on James Island in Charleston, SC, he was the son of the late Jerry and Dolly (Whaley) Watson.



Mr. Watson was a Chief Petty Officer for the US Navy, serving for twenty-one years. He was a former mason at the M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge, a member of the NAACP, a member of VFW Post 263, a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and was founder of the J.W. Hinson Memorial Scholarship. James served as a Deacon and Adult Sunday School Teacher for St. James Baptist Church, Woonsocket and was a member of the church Kitchen Committee and its Trustee Board.



He is survived by a stepson T. Ronald Chaplin, two stepdaughters, Stephanie R. Chaplin, both of Woonsocket and Catherine Burton of New York State; two sisters, Viola Smalls and Mary Watson, both of Charleston, SC, and a grandson, Seth Imani James Chaplin.



His funeral will be held, Wednesday, February 22, 2017 with a service at 10 AM in St. James Baptist Church, 340 South Main St., Woonsocket. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, West Wrentham Rd., Cumberland. Visitation is Tuesday, beginning at 5PM followed by a prayer service at 7PM in the Holt Funeral Home 510 South Main St., Woonsocket. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the J.W. Hinson Memorial Scholarship, 340 South Main St., Woonsocket, RI 02895 or to St. James Baptist Church.
