John Thuot Obituary

John J. Thuot, 81, of North Smithfield, passed away December 31, 2017 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence. He was the husband of Janice (Pennington) Thuot, whom he married on July 10, 1965. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Joseph O. and Mary L. (Gnecco) Thuot.

John served in the U.S. Air Force and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in Air Training as well the Strategic Air Command as an Administrative Specialist. He also worked as a social worker for the State of Rhode Island for four years. Having attended Roger Williams Junior College, he graduated from Providence College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. While attending Providence College, he was a member of the Woonsocket Club, the Leonine Society, the Veterans Club, and was Co-Chairman of the Ring Committee. He continued his graduate work at Simmons College and Rhode Island College. He was always eager to learn new things, completing his educational experience with a Bachelors Degree plus 30 hours. John then worked as a Bellingham High School teacher of English for 32 years, also filling the position of chairman for the English department. Following his retirement he served as a Minister of the Eucharist. He also published a book of self-written poetry in 1971 entitled, A Piece of Me. He was an ardent duck pin bowler during the 1950s, capturing many championships. John loved traveling with his family, life, people, and his dog, Abby.

Besides his wife Janice, John is survived by their son, John J. Thuot II of North Smithfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 5, 2018 at 10 AM in Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 1409 Park Avenue, Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery on Farm Street in Blackstone. Calling hours are omitted, In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, 1085 North Main St. Providence, RI 02904.
