Virginia Sharkey Obituary

Virginia (Cunnion) Sharkey, 87, a two year resident of Bright View Commons and formerly of Morse Avenue in Woonsocket for over forty years, died May 19, 2017. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter J. Sharkey. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Margaret A. (Murray) Cunnion.

A graduate of Hope High School and RISD, Virginia worked as a Public Relations Coordinator for the former Cumberland Engineering Company in South Attleboro, MA, for many years, retiring to be caregiver to her beloved husband who passed away in 2002. She was the salt of the earth, a practical and creative person, she loved life, nature, the arts, painting, photography and writing, which revealed her deep spiritual connection to life. She also enjoyed summering on Great Island for many years and spending winters in Naples, Florida.

She is survived by her sister, Christine Ouimette and her husband Leo of Las Vegas, NV; her nephew, Edmund Ouimette, USMC Ret. of Jacksonville, FL; two great nephews, Jason Cunnion and his wife Heather of Providence and Christopher Cunnion and his wife Deana of Cranston; brother-in-law William Sharkey and his wife Candace of Narragansett, brother-in-law, Vincent Sharkey and his wife Charlotte of Coram, NY and sister-in-law, Marilyn Sharkey of North Kingstown. She was the sister of the late Francis Cunnion and aunt of the late Stephen and Paul Cunnion.

Her funeral will be held Friday, May 26, 2017 beginning with visitation at 9:30 AM in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 415 Olo St., Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Farm St., Blackstone, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the hospice program of Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Rd., Portsmouth, RI 02871.
