Weve lost a gentle lady
Ethel Moy Chan 91, died peacefully in Gods hands on June 20, 2017 in Hope Hospice and Palliative Care Inpatient Center in Providence. She was the wife of the late Ben F. Chan.They werehappily married in Hong Kong in 1947.Born in Canton, China, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Kate (Lau) Moy.
Mrs. Chan was the co-founder of the New Shanghai Restaurant, now Chans Fine Oriental Dining Main Street, Woonsocket.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. William Chan and his wife Garly of Lincoln, John Chan and his wife Laraine of Woonsocket; a daughter Linda Chuh of San Mateo, California; a sister Margaret Huie of Glen Allen, Virginia.
Eight grandchildren Kimberly Chan of NYC, Dr. Benjamin Chan of Boston, Lawrence Chan of Boston, Jonathan Chan of Woonsocket, Erich Chuh and his wife Josefa of California, Elysia Chigas and her husband Frank of California,Teddy Chuh of California and Jeffrey Chuh of Utah. Two great grand children Caleb and Marcus Chuh. She was the sister of the late Yuk Fong of Macao.
Ethel had a wonderful appetite for food and life. Some of the most memorable times were spent over dinner parties with family and friends. She looked forward to her winter visit to California en route to Hong Kong. Lady Luck was oftenher companion when she played mahjong or black jack and slot machinesin the casinos. Ethel was also featured in Judith Potters book Women Working in Woonsocket in 2010.
The Chan Family would like to thank her dedicated care givers Rose Tam and Gladys Oye Tenkorang, her drivers Neil Cote and Roger Desmaris,the team of nurses including Heather herCNA Latoya from Hope Hospice Care for their compassion,and the kind staff at Chans for looking out for Mama Chan.
Her funeral service will be held Saturday, June 24 at 11am in the Chinese Christian Church, 333 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI 02860. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence. Collation will be held at Chans restaurant 267 Main Street, Woonsocket. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 7 PM in the Holt Funeral Home 510 South Main Street, Woonsocket.
