Sylvio Giguere Obituary

Sylvio T. Giguere, 92, of Woonsocket, passed away on April 12, 2018 in the St. Antoine Residence. The son of the late Deus O. and Marie Rose (Raymond) Giguere. He was the husband of sixty nine years to Barbara F. (Figuerido) Giguere.

Though residing in North Adams, MA during his early years, the last 70 he lived in Blackstone, North Smithfield and Woonsocket.

Syl was the former owner-operator of Syls Hairstylists at 356 Avenue A, Woonsocket. A navy veteran of World War II, having served aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Abner Read and the minesweeper U.S.S. Dunlin. He was a survivor of the Abner Read which was sunk during a kamikaze attack. He was awarded the World War II victory medal, Philippine Liberation medal, Asiatic-Pacific medal with commendation and four bronze battle stars. He was the former secretary of the Abner Read Survivors Association, having hosted a reunion in 1990 in Newport. He was also a lifetime member of LeClair-Kozlik-Logan-Bassett Post 6342, Slatersville. He was an original member, treasurer and on the board of directors of the Arc of Northern RI, now Seven Hills Group. Syl was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church and member of the Holy Name Mens Society. He enjoyed travel, most sports, and was an avid golfer. Family was very important to him, and he and his wife loved following their grandchildren and great-grandchildrens activities and attending many games, concerts and special events.

Besides his wife Barbara he is survived by their children; daughter, Sandra Garcia and her husband Gary of Harrisville and son, Richard Giguere of Cumberland; two grandchildren, Lori Bassett and her husband Robert and Glen Garcia; Also, four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Abigail, Morgan Bassett and Ave Evans- Garcia.

His funeral will be held on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 10 AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 S. Main St., Woonsocket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in Our Lady of Queen of Martyrs Church, 1409 Park Ave, Woonsocket. Burial will follow with military honors, in St. Jean the Baptist Cemetery, 310 Wrentham Bellingham, MA. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 -4 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Moran-Ventre Charitable Foundation, 200 Centerville Rd. Suite 1, Warwick, RI 02886.
