Donald C. Stubbs, 89, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024, in St. Antoine Residence, North Smithfield. He was the husband of Sarah "Sally" (Andrews) Stubbs of Woonsocket and the late Lorraine (Thivierge) Stubbs. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Clark) Stubbs.
Donald retired in 2000 after serving proudly as a teacher for more than 40 years. Mr. Stubbs worked as a chemistry teacher, science department chair and cross country coach for Ponaganset Regional High School. He previously worked for La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale, New York, Bishop Bradley High School in Manchester, New Hampshire, and Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, New York. Mr. Stubbs took great pride in his efforts to get laboratories installed in every single classroom for his high school's science program.
Donald was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the Alliance for Better Long Term Care, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was also involved with Project 2061, a long-term initiative of the AAAS that aims to help all Americans become literate in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). In his spare time, Don loved spending time sitting on the front porch greeting neighbors as they walked by the house. He would have a glass of red wine in one hand and in the other hand he’d have peanuts, which he shared with the squirrels that would visit him on the porch. Don was an avid Bruins fan. He and Sally also cheered on the Red Sox, spending several seasons in Florida during Spring Training.
Along with his wife Sally, he is survived by his son, Derek Stubbs of Portland, Oregon; his step-children, Greg Mete, and his wife Margie, of Kodiak, Alaska, Lisa Doherty, and her husband Charles, of North Smithfield, Linda Lovett, and her husband David, of Johnston and David Andrews, and his wife Anne, of Cranston; thirteen grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was the step-father of the late Jay Mete and the late Daniel Andrews, Jr. and the grandfather of the late Jennifer Mete-Dietrick.
His funeral will be held Thursday, October 10, 2024 beginning with visitation at 10AM followed by a service at 11AM in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 S Main St., Woonsocket. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1999, Memphis, TN 38101, or to Shriners Hospitals for Children, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394.
