Isobel Sherman (nee Zalk), 100, passed on October 15, 2024. She married the love of her life, Julius Sherman,on October 24, 1943, they were inseparable until his death 58 years later on June 13, 2001. Surviving descendants include her four children, Diane Schuman (Alan), David Sherman (Pam), Mitchell Sherman (Kathy), and Brian Sherman; four grandchildren, Daniel (Rosa) and Sarah Schuman, David Sherman (Paige) and Sally Watson (Lonnie) and four great-grandchildren, Julia and Jonathan Schuman, and Robert and Michael Watson. Additional survivors include one sibling, nieces and nephews, including Daryl, Abbe, Michael, Ben their partners and kids.
Isobel was an active baker, knitter, and gardener, well-known for her pear sauce and Providence accent. She was born in 1923, the second of five children, to Dora and Phillip Zalk, who were antique dealers. In high school, she was an award-winning bowler. Upon graduation from Hope High School, she worked in several offices, including as a switchboard operator. After her marriage to Julie, she was renown in Woonsocket as the head hostess at a series of family restaurants that culminated in the Broaster House on Pond St., known to the world for its delicious broasted chicken and in the family for long hours and hard work. Isobel was active in the B'nai Israel Synagogue sisterhood.
Upon their retirement, Isobel an Julie spent six months annually in South Miami Beach, FL, following a long family tradition. She made many friends there, including her dear friend Charles Collins, who enjoyed walking a mere three blocks to the beach and eating at the Diner. Julie and Isobel traveled the world extensively by cruise ship and in-country tours.
For the last few years, Isobel resided in an assisted living facility in Rhode Island, where she continued to make friends and was a champion chair volleyball player.
Her funeral will be held Monday, October 21, 2024 at 1PM in Congregation B'nai Israel Cemetery, Mendon Rd., Woonsocket. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
