James L. Kane, Jr., 95, of North Smithfield, died February 6, 2021 in St. Antoine Residence, North Smithfield. Born in Acushnet, MA, he was the son of the late James L. Kane, Sr. and Marguerite E. (Lannon) Kane.
Mr. Kane was a graduate of Blackstone High School Class of 1943, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a Plank Owner of the USS Miami CL89, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Throughout his tour he sailed 166,866 Nautical Miles, and Jim would earn six battle stars for engagements at Western Carolines, Marianas, Leyte, Luzon, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. After receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1946, he went on to graduate from Providence College, Class of 1951. Mr. Kane worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. from 1951-1963, Providence Washington Insurance from 1963-1968, and McCarthys Dry Goods Co. from 1968-1989, where he would serve as President and Treasurer from 1972-1989.
Jim is survived by his sister, Teresa Kane Chartier, of North Smithfield; his sister-in-law, Claire Drainville Kane of Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews, including Margaret Benevides and her Husband Mike, William Callanan and his wife Diane, Katharine Burns and her husband Tim, David Kane and his wife Sally, Deborah Kane, Amy Maratea and her husband Scott, Thomas Kane, Jr and his wife Michaela, James Chartier and his wife Nancy, MaryEllen Barnatt and her husband Tom, John Kane Chartier, Matthew Kane Chartier, Karen Kane and her husband Bruce Levesque and Beth Elliott and her husband James.He was the brother of the late M. Alice Callanan, Thomas J. Kane, Sr. Esq, and William J. Kane.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 10 AM in St. Charles Church, 190 North Main St., Woonsocket, and may be viewed live at
