Maurice Valentine Lapsley, 69, of Cumberland passed away on July 30th at Miriam Hospital in Providence.
He was the husband of Verlyn (Browne) Lapsley, whom he married August 29th, 1981. Born in St. Kitts and Nevis, he was the son of the late St. Clair Lapsley and Vivian (Matthews) Lapsley.
Mr. Lapsley worked as a Quality Control Inspector for Osram Sylvania until his retirement, and then briefly at Providence Post office thereafter. Mr. Lapsley was also a very active musician, particularly on the drums, playing in the band Sombras and The Val Morris Band. He was also a popular DJ known as the International DJ Valentino.
To relax he liked gardening, yard work, cooking, jogging, playing soccer, and watching boxing. He enjoyed Family Feud and Jeopardy! As well. He also loved to tell jokes, play tricks and pranks but would most want to be remembered for being the life of any party with his flashy style and unique custom fashions.
Along with his wife, Verlyn, he is survived by his four children, Avan Lapsley of St. Kitts and Nevis, Vernon Lapsley-Taylor of NY, Valyncia Lapsley of Cumberland, and Zardi Lapsley of Cumberland; four brothers, Clement Matthews, Clyde Collie Lapsley, and Stedmon Lapsley, all of Providence, and Oscar Lapsley of Atlanta, GA; four sisters, Sylvene Sylla Davoren of NY, Victorene Thompson of Cranston, Carol Holloway of Atlanta, GA, and Venetta Simonds of Toronto; 6 grandchildren and 3 Great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late St. Clair, Rensford, Carlo, Lorenzo, and Beulah Lapsley, and Vida Baby Doll Bridgewater.
