Robert Bourgery Obituary

Robert Bourgery, 79, of Lincoln and Longboat Key, FL died May 1, 2018 in Bradenton, FL. He was the husband of Phyllis E. (Dion) Bourgery whom he married September 28, 1965. Born in Woonsocket and raised in Blackstone, he was the son of the late Albert and Mary (Woods) Bourgery.

A graduate of Mt. St. Charles and a Veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Bourgery worked as an elementary school physical education teacher for the Blackstone-Millville School Dept. for thirty-four years. He also served as the recreation director of Tupperware Park Recreations Center, later named the Blackstone Recreation Center, for twenty-seven summers. Robert was a member of the Elks, both in Woonsocket and Bradenton, FL, a lifetime member of the Cercle Laurier, Woonsocket, and a member of the Moose Lodge, Bradenton, FL. He was a longtime member and official with the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IIABO), a softball official and he spent many afternoons and evenings as an official on the basketball courts and softball fields in the Blackstone Valley. Bob was an avid sportsman, enjoyed biking, swimming and working out at the racquetball club in Woonsocket, and he was a New England sports fan, watching many Red Sox and Celtics game on tv. He was the founder of the Blackstone Masters Basketball League over thirty years ago, which is a competitive league for men over the age of 35.

Besides his wife Phyllis, he is survived by three children, Robert H. Bourgery, II of Apopka, FL, Daniel C. Bourgery and his wife Patricia of Blackstone and Lisa Meciak and her husband John of Dudley, MA; a brother, Richard Bourgery and his wife Sandra of Blackstone; a sister, Barbara Dumais and her husband Harold of Johnston; and three grandchildren, Joshua and Daria Bourgery and Chelsea Meciak. He was the brother of the late Roger and Joseph Bourgery and Florence Krylo.

His funeral will be held Saturday, May 12, 2018 beginning with visitation at 9 AM in St. Judes Church, 301 Front St., Lincoln, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM. Burial will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater New England Multiple Sclerosis Society, mailed to: Memorials and Tributes, Greater New England MS Society, P.O. Box 845945, Boston, MA 02284.
