Ruth T. (Martin) Johnson

Ruth T. (Martin) Johnson, 92, of North Smithfield, passed away December 14, 2023 in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late James Johnson, Sr. Born in North Smithfield, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Margaret (Aspell) Martin.

Mrs. Johnson worked as a kindergarten teacher in the North Smithfield School Dept. She never failed to recognize any of her former students when she chanced to see them around town decades later. Ruth was an avid hiker and cross-country skier and would often be found working in the many perennial gardens that dotted her beloved property.

She is survived by her son, James Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Nicole, of Providence; her daughter, Jennifer Johnson of North Smithfield; and her grandson, Nathaniel Johnson. Aunt Ruth to all, she leaves many generations of nieces and nephews, including Chris and Kristy Creighton and Wayne and Diane Martin who resided near her on the family farm. She was predeceased by her sisters Florence Kostka and Alice Creighton, as well as brothers Francis, Edward, and Bobby Martin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11:00 AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church St., Slatersville. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, 200 Niantic Ave., Providence, RI, 02907.
