Walter Keene Obituary

Walter F. Keene, 92, of North Smithfield died March 13, 2025 at Miriam Hospital, surrounded by his adoring family. He was born in North Providence and raised on a small family farm in Smithfield, RI.

He owned and operated Walter F. Keene Excavating for over 40 years before turning the business over to his son Daniel and continued to work another 20 years. He was a member of the Primrose Grange and a charter member of the Primrose Volunteer Fire Department in North Smithfield where he served as Deputy Chief. He also served as President and Caretaker of the Union Cemetery for many years. Walter lived a life of simplicity, peace, and integrity. He was an avid NASCAR and Bruins fan. He was well liked and respected by all who knew him.

His wife of 72 years and the love of his life, Janet (Follett) Keene, survives him. He is also survived by his sons Jeffrey, Richard, Douglas, and Daniel, and daughters Robin, Tracy, Jody, and Jessie, nineteen grandchildren, and twenty-five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Beatrice (Jeffery), brothers Ernest, George, David and sister Brenda.

He thanked God every day for his many blessings. His family thanks God every day for the immense love and happiness he provided them for the many years they were blessed to have him as husband/dad/grandfather/great-grandfather. At his request, services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 S. Main St, Woonsocket, RI.
