LTC Robert J. Chaput Jr. (ret), 83, of North Smithfield, died June 1, 2019 at Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island- Philip Huillitar Center, Providence. He was the husband of the late Evelyn (Cianci) Chaput and the late Doris (Duprey) Chaput. Born in Central Falls, RI, he was the son of the late Robert Sr., and Lillian (Lariviere) Chaput.
He was a graduate of Mount St. Charles Academy class of 1953 where he played hockey. Bob enlisted in the U.S Army/Rhode Island National Guard in 1954, and later was commissioned as a second lieutenant, after completing officer training school at the Rhode Island Military Academy, Class #2 in 1962.
He was commissioned as an engineer officer, serving in various duty assignments in the 243rd Engineer Battalion. He was later assigned to the 103rd Field Artillery Brigade, which he served in numerous positions. After serving 32 years, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1987.
LTC Chaput's awards include, Meritorious Service Medal. Army Commendation, Army Achievement, Good Conduct, Army Reserve Comp. Achievement , National Defense, Humanitarian Service, Rhode Island Emergency Service, and numerous other awards.
After his military career Bob started selling farm equipment, with his father, out of his home on Iron Mine Hill Rd. In the late 70’s as the business started to grow he expanded the business to Rt. 146 giving it the name “Homestead Equipment” where he continued to sell farm equipment and used cars until the late 1980’s. Bob moved to the US Virgin Island- Saint Croix in 1989 until 2017 when he returned to Rhode Island. While living in St. Croix he owned several rental properties and was the president of the St. George Homeowners Association. Bob sang tenor in The Slatersville Congregational Church and also The Interfaith Choir under the direction of Alfred Lague for many years.
Bob was an avid ping pong player, he enjoyed bowling and played tennis multiple times a day. He was a member of several USTA Teams and also a member of the Buccaneer Tennis Club in St. Croix and won many father and son tennis championships in RI and St. Croix.
He is survived by his son, Thomas Chaput and his wife Bethany Richardson of North Scituate, RI; two stepsons, Edward Cianci and his wife Susan of North Smithfield; John Cianci and his wife Wendy of North Smithfield; a stepdaughter, Laurie Cianci of Narragansett, RI; Son in law, Richard Sinapi of Warwick; ten grandchildren, John, Jr., Anthony, Nicholas, Casey, Shawn, Carter, Melissa, Mia, Alex and Jorge; four great grandchildren, Troy, Giovanni, Gianna and Jameson; goddaughter, Cheryl Duprey of Cumberland; niece, Lorna Simpson of Warwick; lifelong best friend, Jack St.Jean of Coventry; as well as many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Friday, June 7, 2019 at 10:30 AM at the Slatersville Congregational Church, 25 Green St., Slatersville, military honors will follow at the church. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held from 4-7 PM on Thursday in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 S. Main St, Woonsocket.
